 I like nothing more than to ride the two-lane highways and winding roads along the coast of upper Peninsula.


From Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Munising along M 28 into Marquette where I like to stop at Third Street Bagel in town near Northern Michigan University. If you’re there check out the inside football or sports dome they have-- it is called the Superior Dome. It’s the site of a couple of Olympic training facilities such as weight lifting and wrestling. I can’t believe how great the practice field is inside this dome.
 
From there I like to take the scenic route along Lake Superior up to Houghton, Michigan to visit my nephews who go to Michigan Tech. 
Go exploring up Big Bay Road (550) before heading back to M-41 to Houghton, Michigan. After checking out Michigan Tech campus head in to town and try Keweenaw Brewing Company or Joey Seafood and Grill. From there back on M 41 to Copper Harbor. There are many great hiking trails on the Keweenaw Peninsula some with waterfalls to see in others with great views of Lake Superior. A sunset must be checked out for sure.

Riding motorcycles through the entire Upper Peninsula is fantastic. Whether you come in from Wisconsin or over the Mackinac Bridge there are great rides across the entire UP. In Sault Ste. Marie be sure to check out the famous locks-- the Soo Locks. These are a set of parallel locks which enable large ships to go from Lake Superior to the lower Great Lakes. The locks are actually within the St. Mary’s River north of Lake Huron which separates Ontario, Canada and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the United States. When riding motorcycles through this area, check out Lake Superior State University which is Michigan’s smallest public university.

The accident data center reports that Marquette County and Delta County have the greatest number of serious injury or death accidents involving motor vehicles and motorcycles in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Houghton County and Dickinson County are tied with the next placement of third as having the most injury car accidents or wrongful death accidents involving all kinds of vehicle such as cars, trucks, vans, SUVs and motorcycles.

The following information is based on Michigan traffic crash facts from Michigan’s Office of Highway Safety Planning, 2015 four Marquette County which is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The study looked into vehicle crashes that include motorcycles and passenger vehicles as well as cargo carrying vehicles such as semi-trucks and delivery trucks that were involved in injury and death auto accidents known as MVAs that occurred in Marquette County, Michigan. It is unknown what percent of them hired personal injury attorneys who specialized in the areas of auto negligence or motorcycle negligence. For Marquette County there were 1,772 injury crashes with two fatalities in 2015; the reported number of drivers for this statistic was 2,881. This means that there were many single vehicle accidents resulting in injury in this Northern Central Upper Peninsula County that has the same name of its city – Marquette, Michigan. This government paper list 14 motorcycle crashes with two wrongful death motorcycle crashes both of which happened outside the city limits. 68 of all of the vehicle/motorcycle crashes involved drinking alcohol. The drunk driver that causes a motorcycle or car accident, in this writer’s opinion, is presumed negligent. There may also be a different target defendant the victim has besides the drunk driver. Sometimes the bar that sold the drunk driver alcohol while he or she was visibly intoxicated can be held liable and responsible for the damage the drunk driver has caused.
