Three claims after a motorcycle accident

The Motorcycle Legal Minute™ was created by Jason Waechter, THE Motorcycle Lawyer, to explain Michigan’s motorcycle law in a short and easy to understand way.

There was a big change in Michigan’s No-Fault law in 2020. It is: we now choose the amount of PIP medical we want on our cars, trucks and vans.

Motorcycles are different from cars when it comes to which insurance company is responsible for paying No-Fault benefits for injured motorcyclists. This is especially relevant because it includes medical bills. With a car, you just go to your own insurance

and you get the amount of PIP medical that you chose and paid for.

However, with a motorcycle, a biker gets his or her No-Fault benefits from the vehicle involved’s insurance company. Now, because we pick the amount of PIP Medical coverage we want, the motorcyclist is only entitled to the amount that the negligent driver chose for himself.

This is the biggest way Michigan motorcyclists get shafted under this new law.
