Grand Rapids Man Charged in Connection with Fatal Motorcycle Collision

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Police Department announced on Tuesday the filing of charges against a 25-year-old man, Casey Wynsma, in relation to a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred in September.

Wynsma faces serious allegations including operating while intoxicated causing death, reckless driving causing death, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death, each of which could result in a maximum sentence of 15 years if he is found guilty.

The incident took place on September 18, 2023, when Wynsma, traveling southbound on Alpine Avenue NW, collided with 59-year-old motorcyclist Gregory Vanocker, who was navigating Leonard Street at the time of the tragic accident.

Expressing his sentiments on the matter, Grand Rapids Police Department Chief Eric Winstrom stated, "I hope these charges bring some measure of closure to Gregory’s loved ones." He further emphasized the dire consequences of impaired driving, urging the community to refrain from getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Chief Winstrom's statement reflects the ongoing concern regarding impaired driving and its impact not only on the individuals involved but also on their families and the wider community. The charges against Wynsma highlight the legal and moral responsibilities drivers hold to ensure the safety of all road users.
