Should Michigan Motorcyclists Get Motorcycle Medical Coverage?

Do you know about motorcycle medical insurance coverage? Is it worth it to get motorcycle medical coverage? Answers to your questions about motorcycle medical coverage and what coverage pays way better.

Just sitting here pondering motorcycle insurance. I get a lot of questions as to whether Michigan motorcyclists should get medical insurance coverage on their motorcycle. It's actually called "first party medical coverage" and it doesn't pay that often. You see, it's the last source of payment for any medical bills. So if you health insuance, health insurance will pay first. If another car is involved in the wreck, and you're entitled to no-fault benefits, then that's what pays your medical bills. It's very infrequent that it's utilized. I also get a lot of complaints about it. Because most of these policies only cover the motorcyclist or an actual relative that was on the motorcycle. Think of all the people who aren't actually married, but lived together for five, ten years as boyfriend and girlfriend, one is on the back of the bike and they go down. There's no other source of payment for medical bills and they say "hey, motorcycle insurance, I bought this medical coverage, pay these bills." and they say "no, there's an exclusion. We only cover a motorcyclist or a relative." So read your policy if you have one and if you're considering one, then be sure to understand who is covered should you go down with a passenger. You might not even be covered.

What I do recommend is, and I know everybody can do it, but purchase health insurance. Health insurance is going to pay way more than medical coverage on a motorcycle. Usually motorcycle medical coverage is only available in $5000 increments. The most I've actually ever worked with is $25,000, I've heard of a $50,000 policy but medical bills can rack up fast after a motorcycle accident so I recommend having health insurance that's going to pay more. When a motor vehicle is involved (car, truck hits motorcycle) then no-fault is going to pay and usually the minimum there is $250,000.

Also, a reminder to insure your motorcycle. Yes, it’s the law and you can get a ticket if you don't insure the motorcycle, but the biggest reason is to protect yourself should you get in a motorcycle accident. Without it you are totally excluded from getting no-fault benefits. By not having just the most basic motorcycle insurance, you could be stuck owing hundreds of thousands of dollars. So recap, get health insurance, and make sure you have an insurance policy on your motorcycle.
