Why Michigan Motorcyclists Need to Know About PIP Medical Choice, Even Though We Can’t Choose It

Michigan motorcyclists need to know about no-fault’s PIP Medical Choice, even though a motorcyclist can’t buy it. Here’s some background that will help: No fault insurance can only be purchased for cars, trucks, and vans - NOT motorcycles.

The biggest no-fault benefit is PIP Medical, which pays medical bills after an accident.

Motorcyclists are entitled to PIP Medical ONLY when a car, truck or van is involved in the wreck. Further, motorcyclists get their PIP Medical from the insurance company for the CAR that was INVOLVED in the wreck.

The motorcyclist is stuck with the amount that CAR driver chose for the CAR DRIVER’S PIP medical. I’ll say it another way: a motorcyclist is at the mercy of what the negligent driver chose for himself. 

NEW SCENARIO:  If that car driver is uninsured, the motorcyclist next goes to his own car or truck for PIP Medical bill payment. This is why a motorcyclist needs to know the PIP Choice options. They are:

• Unlimited coverage  
• $500,000 coverage
• $250,000 coverage 
• Qualified Medicaid recipients: $50,000 coverage 
• A “Qualified Person” may opt out entirely
