Michigan Motorcycle Insurance: Collision Coverage Explained

Author: Jason Waechter | Date: April 25, 2025 | Category: MC Legal Minute

The Motorcycle Legal Minute™ was created by Jason Waechter, THE Motorcycle Lawyer, to explain Michigan’s motorcycle law in a short and easy to understand way.

The Three Types of Collision Coverage

In Michigan, our no-fault system does not allow us to go after the other guy in a typical Michigan vehicle accident. Now with cars and trucks, the at-fault driver or his insurance company can be required to pay your out-of-pocket deductible or up to $3,000, if you did not have collision coverage. Again, that only applies to cars and trucks.

Collision coverage applies to all your vehicles and there are three types:

  1. Limited Collision: Provides coverage only if you are not at fault.
  2. Standard Collision: Provides coverage regardless of fault, and you always pay your deductible.
  3. Broad Form Collision: Provides coverage regardless of fault and, if it was not your fault, you don’t have to pay your deductible.

Coverage for the damage to your motorcycle is very fact specific and was only just touched upon here. See our eBooks or other webpages for all the details.
