Michigan Helmet Laws for Side By Sides

Author: Jason Waechter | Date: April 12, 2025 | Category: Motorcycle Laws

Helmets – In Michigan, All ORV (including side by side) operators and passengers must wear a U.S. Department of Transportation–approved crash helmet and protective eyewear or goggles, except when the ORV is equipped with a roof that meets or exceeds the standards for a crash helmet and the operator and passengers are wearing properly adjusted and fastened safety belts.

Motorcycle Helmets For Side by Sides Are Required In Michigan

In 2012, Michigan passed a law giving some street-legal motorcycle operators the option of not wearing a helmet when operating on roadways. This law does not apply to ORVs, and helmets are still legally required to be worn by operators and passengers on ORVs, including side by sides, in Michigan.

Michigan Motorcycle Helmet Law for Side by Sides 2022

Motorcycle helmet laws for street legal riding were updated in 2012, and haven’t changed in 2022. The helmet law for side by sides in 2022 requires All side by side (and other ORV) operators and passengers to wear a U.S. Department of Transportation–approved crash helmet and protective eyewear or goggles. There is an exception when the ORV is equipped with a roof that meets or exceeds the standards for a crash helmet and the operator and passengers are wearing properly adjusted and fastened safety belts.
