Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA): Motorcyclists Shafted Again, but One Good Thing

Many have heard of the MCCA which stands for the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association. The purpose of the fund is to reimburse insurance companies on any no fault medical claims that exceed $580,000. This helps limit insurance companies’ exposure.

They know they will never have a claim they have to pay over $580,000.

When our no-fault system included unlimited medical bill payment, every insured vehicle – cars AND motorcycles – paid into this fund. The last amount was $220 a year.

When the no-fault law changed in 2020, only the car and truck drivers that chose unlimited PIP medical were required to pay an assessment. The assessment was reduced to $100, because there are going to be way fewer claims since many people are not choosing unlimited for PIP Medical.

But here’s the rub for motorcyclists: You can’t buy no-fault on your motorcycle. We only get no-fault benefits when a car or truck is involved in the crash, not if you wreck because of gravel, a pothole, a deer, a road defect or another motorcycle.

So, why do we STILL have to pay into the MCCA?
