Happy Birthday To A Daredevil Legend: Evel Knievel's Life and Legacy
Published: October 14, 2023
Butte, Montana (The Motorcycle Lawyer) - On this day, fans of all ages and backgrounds gather to celebrate the birthday of a true American icon, the one and only Evel Knievel. Born Robert Craig Knievel on October 17, 1938, in Butte, Montana, Knievel left an indelible mark on the world of daredevilry and became a household name for his awe-inspiring motorcycle jumps and spectacular stunts. As we commemorate his birthday, let's take a journey through the life and times of this legendary figure.
Early Life and Beginnings
Evel Knievel's journey into the world of daredevilry was, in many ways, as thrilling as the stunts he later became famous for. Raised in the rugged terrain of Montana, he developed a love for motorcycles at a young age. At 8 years old, he hopped on his first motorcycle and, well, never looked back.
Knievel joined the U.S. Army, where he excelled in motorcycle racing. After leaving the military, he pursued various careers, from insurance salesman to the proprietor of a Honda motorcycle dealership. Yet, it was his passion for stunts that set him on a path to greatness.
The Birth of a Legend
Evel Knievel's career as a daredevil began with small-time local stunts. But his ambition knew no bounds. He craved the thrill of jumping over ever-increasing numbers of cars, buses, and even a cage of rattlesnakes. His early successes, such as jumping over 16 cars at Ascot Park in Gardena, California, hinted at what was to come.
The year 1967 marked a pivotal moment in Knievel's career when he attempted to jump the fountains at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. The stunt went terribly wrong, resulting in severe injuries and hospitalization. This near-fatal accident did little to dampen his spirits. In fact, it only added to his mystique and cemented his status as a daredevil.
Breaking World Records and Capturing Hearts
Evel Knievel continued to capture the world's imagination with his jaw-dropping stunts, each more daring than the last. He set numerous world records, including a jump over 13 Mack trucks in 1971, and successfully cleared the Snake River Canyon in a rocket-powered "Skycycle" in 1974. His red, white, and blue leather jumpsuit became an iconic symbol of American daredevilry.
Beyond the jumps and stunts, Knievel's charismatic personality and flair for showmanship set him apart. He had the rare ability to captivate an audience and inspire awe and admiration. His televised stunts, often broadcast as thrilling events, drew millions of viewers and solidified his place in pop culture history.
Legacy and Influence
Evel Knievel's legacy extends far beyond his remarkable stunts. His fearlessness, determination, and passion inspired countless individuals to pursue their own dreams, no matter how daring they might be. Knievel's influence can be seen in the rise of extreme sports, motorcycle stunts, and the countless daredevils who have followed in his footsteps.
Knievel's life was not without controversy or challenges, but it was a life lived on his terms, fearlessly and unapologetically. He passed away on November 30, 2007, but his legend lives on, as fans and enthusiasts continue to celebrate his memory and the inspiration he provided.
A Birthday to Remember
On what would have been his 85th birthday, fans worldwide gather to remember the fearless Evel Knievel. The daredevil extraordinaire may have left us physically, but his spirit continues to soar as high as any of his iconic jumps. The celebrations today remind us of the courage and determination that made Knievel a legend, a hero, and an enduring symbol of the American spirit.
So, as we raise a toast to the memory of Evel Knievel, let's also raise our own ambitions and dreams, emboldened by the fearless legacy of a man who defied gravity and captured the hearts of millions around the world. Happy Birthday, Evel Knievel, and thank you for your extraordinary life and times!

BMW Halts US Motorcycle Sales
WTH is going on with BMW? BMW's Temporary Pause on Gas Motorcycle Sales
In an unexpected and unprecedented turn of events for fans of BMW motorcycles in the United States and Canada, BMW North America has initiated a temporary halt on the sale of all gas-powered motorcycles, both new and pre-owned. The only exception to this sweeping suspension is BMW's recently introduced CE 04 electric scooter.
BMW Temporarily Halts Gas Motorcycle Sales in North America Reportedly Due to Emissions Compliance
The decision behind this move is suspected of stemming from concerns related to the emissions system found in all BMW bikes, affecting both new and used models. According to reports, a notice dispatched to dealers by BMW indicates that a material within the emissions system does not meet specified material standards. It's important to note that while BMW has specifically stated what the issues is that caused it to freeze ALL SALES in the U.S., BMW emphasizes that this issue does not pose a safety hazard, allowing current motorcycle owners to continue riding without apprehension. Instead, the matter revolves around emissions compliance.
BMW Temporarily Halts Gas Motorcycle Sales in North America
A BMW representative provided insights into the situation, stating, "BMW of North America is dedicated to providing vehicles to our customers that meet their expectations. To ensure that our vehicles are of the highest industry standards, BMW performs ongoing testing and evaluation. Following a recent quality analysis, BMW is pursuing measures to further evaluate the material used in a component of its motorcycle emissions system, which may not have been produced to material specifications. As a result, BMW of North America is issuing a temporary, voluntary stop-sale for all new and pre-owned BMW motorcycle models in dealer inventory, except for the CE 04. This temporary stop sale is not safety related, and BMW owners may continue to ride their motorcycles as normal.
How Long Is the Temporary Sales Freeze Expected To Last?
At this time, BMW has only said it's a temporary stop-sale. But since it covers every new and used BMW motorcycle in the US, it's assumed there's a major problem that's going to take some time to resolve. How long depends on what the problem is and what the fix requires. Even a small part change can take up to several weeks or even months to apply to all the inventory in the US. Until we hear from BMW, everyone will continue to speculate, including the dealers.
The decision to halt sales extends to both the U.S. and Canada, as both countries share similar emissions regulations. It is likely that this temporary suspension of sales is aimed at giving BMW the opportunity to identify and rectify the issue across all existing inventory before resuming sales.
At present, the extent of the issue and which motorcycle generations it impacts remain uncertain, although sales of all new and used or all generations have been halted. Notably, the BMW CE 04, being fully electric and devoid of an emissions system, remains unaffected by the stop-sale directive.
As BMW works toward a resolution for this matter, it is unknown if dealer inventory will undergo necessary corrections or how any inventory solution would look. However, no official announcement has been made regarding the status of motorcycles currently owned by consumers.
The Motorcycle Lawyer is monitoring BMW of North America for further information and updates.

Rocky Robinson's Motorcycle Land Speed Record Still Stands, 13 Years Later
On September 25, 2023, Rocky Robinson's motorcycle land speed record will celebrate it's 13th birthday. It's truly incredible, considering the advancements in technology, and it highlights the achievement as nothing short of extraordinary.
When it comes to defining the limits of speed on two wheels, the numbers often boggle the mind. In the United States, maximum speed limits typically range between 55 and 80 mph, depending on the state. The fastest street-legal motorcycle in the world can reach a top speed of 273 miles per hour (439 km/h, which is an insanes speed.
However, all of this pales in comparison to the astonishing motorcycle land speed record of 376.363 mph! This extraordinary achievement was realized by none other than the legendary rider, Rocky Robinson, on a historic day - September 25, 2010, in the heart of Utah. Read on to learn more about the riveting narrative of how Rocky Robinson etched his name into the annals of motorcycle history.
The Relentless Pursuit
In the realm of motorcycle speed, Rocky Robinson's journey was nothing short of extraordinary. Remarkably, this wasn't Robinson's first foray into speed world records; it was his third in just four years. His previous conquests in 2006 and 2008 had already rewritten the record books, putting him in a league of his own. Before Robinson's arrival on the scene, the previous record had stood unchallenged for an astonishing 16 years.
The Sacred Ground
The stage for this awe-inspiring achievement was none other than the legendary Bonneville Speedway, nestled amidst the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The speedway, a site of historic significance, finds itself on the National Register of Historic Places, and for good reason. It has borne witness to the audacious endeavors of daredevils like Robinson, who sought to push the limits of human and machine.
Bonneville's storied history also boasts another iconic moment when, in 1997, Andy Green broke the world land speed record with the Thrust SSC car, reaching an astonishing 763.035 mph, making him the fastest person on Earth. Remarkably, as of 2023, Green's record remains unbroken, a testament to the enduring spirit of speed.
The Date with Destiny
Rocky Robinson etched his name into the annals of history on September 25, 2010. This remarkable achievement occurred more than five decades after the inception of the first fully streamlined modern motorcycle.
The Machine of Marvel - TOP 1 Ack Attack
The human body is simply not equipped to withstand the blistering pace of 376.363 mph while perched on two wheels. To conquer this formidable challenge, motorcycle racer and designer Mike Akatiff and his ingenious team conceived the bespoke TOP 1 Ack Attack.
Measuring a staggering 19.67 feet in length, 2.5 feet in height, and weighing a robust 1,650 pounds, this streamlined motorcycle bears a closer resemblance to a spacecraft than a conventional bike. It features a cylindrical riding case that stands erect when stationary, thanks to the support of two folding side wheels.
Powering the TOP 1 Ack Attack are two Suzuki Hayabusa in-line four-cylinder engines, capable of reaching an astounding maximum of 12,000 rpm with a net horsepower ranging from 700 to 900.
The Record-Setting Triumph
On that momentous September day in 2010, Robinson and the TOP 1 Ack Attack embarked on a blistering journey. Covering the Bonneville Speedway at an astonishing speed not once, but twice, was the challenge at hand. The average speed calculated from these two breathtaking runs over one measured kilometer or 0.6 miles - 376.363 mph - was the figure that etched Robinson's name into the annals of the motorcycle land speed record.
In a truly jaw-dropping feat, it's worth noting that Robinson actually hit a top speed of 394 mph during one of his runs, a testament to the indomitable spirit of human and machine in pursuit of the extraordinary.
A Timeless Tribute to Velocity
As we celebrate the 13th anniversary of Rocky Robinson's record-setting motorcycle land speed record, we pay homage to the relentless pursuit of speed that knows no bounds. The Bonneville Salt Flats continue to beckon, offering a timeless stage for those who dare to chase the elusive specter of velocity. Rocky Robinson's achievement, along with the indomitable TOP 1 Ack Attack, remains a beacon for all speed enthusiasts, igniting the flames of aspiration for generations to come.

A Comprehensive Guide to Obtaining a Free Motorcycle History Report
If you're in the market for a used motorcycle, it's crucial to ensure that your potential purchase is free from hidden issues like theft, liens, or undisclosed damage. A motorcycle history report can provide valuable insights into a bike's past. While paid reports are readily available, you can obtain a free motorcycle history report with ease. In this article, we'll not only explain how to get a free report but also delve into what these reports contain and their significance in making an informed purchase decision.
What Is Included in a Motorcycle History Report?
Before delving into the process of obtaining a free motorcycle history report, let's first understand what these reports typically encompass:
Ownership History: A report will detail the bike's previous owners and how frequently it changed hands.
Liens and Loans: Discover if there are any outstanding loans or liens on the motorcycle, which can affect your ability to own it free and clear.
Odometer Reading: The report includes the last recorded mileage, helping you verify if the mileage is accurate.
Market Value: Find out the current market value of the motorcycle, allowing you to assess whether the asking price is fair.
Vehicle Specifications: Information on fuel efficiency, maintenance records, warranties, and other relevant specifications.
Additional Specifications: Details such as weight, engine specifications, length, width, and more.
Accident History: Learn about any accidents the motorcycle may have been involved in and the extent of repairs performed.
OEM Recalls: Discover if the manufacturer issued any recalls for the motorcycle.
Previous Usage: Determine whether the motorcycle was used as a taxi, rental, or for other commercial purposes.
Obtaining a Free Motorcycle History Report in Two Simple Steps:
Now, let's explore the process of obtaining a free motorcycle history report in just two straightforward steps:
Step 1: Locate the Motorcycle's VIN Number
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique identifier assigned to the motorcycle, similar to a Social Security Number. It consists of 17 characters, including both numbers and letters. Most motorcycles have their VIN located near the steering column base, near the cylinders, or stamped on the frame.
Step 2: Go Online
Thanks to the internet, acquiring a free motorcycle history report has never been easier. Here's how to proceed:
Go to reputable websites like VinFreeCheck or VINCheck.

Minimize your chances of getting one, saving valuable time and money in the process. No need to check numerous documentations to confirm your suspicions. No need to schedule an appointment with the DMV and wait in a queue. On the spot, you can review most, if not, all pertinent documents with a click using our Motorcycle VIN lookup and decoder tool. Get a FREE Motorcycle VIN check that can be accessed anytime, anywhere!
Enter the motorcycle's VIN into the provided search field.
You'll receive a free report that includes collision reports, detailed history records, odometer readings, real-time market pricing, and more.
If you don't have the VIN, you can enter the license plate on some websites, but this may come with a fee. It's recommended to locate the VIN to access a truly free report.
Free vs. Paid Motorcycle History Reports:
While obtaining a free motorcycle history report provides a good starting point for your research, it may not provide as much information as a paid report. Here's a brief comparison:
Free Reports: Ideal for initial screening and comparing multiple motorcycles without upfront costs. They offer valuable insights into a bike's history.
Paid Reports: Offer more comprehensive information, including detailed accident histories, service records, and additional data that can be essential for a thorough assessment of the motorcycle's condition.

Celebrating the Legendary Evel Knievel Snake River Jump: A 49-Year Anniversary Tribute
Published on September 8, 2023 at 12AM
Twin Falls, ID (The Motorcycle Lawyer) — In the heart of Southern Idaho, the awe-inspiring Snake River majestically flows, drawing around 300,000 visitors annually to the captivating Snake River Canyon, which plunges to depths surpassing 500 feet. This scenic marvel became the backdrop to one of the most iconic motorcycle stunts in history – the Evel Knievel Snake River Jump in Idaho.
As we commemorate the 49th anniversary of this daring feat, we embark on a journey to relive the astonishing leap that continues to captivate enthusiasts worldwide.
Evel Knievel's Fearsome Ambition
Within the vast expanse of the Snake River Canyon, renowned daredevil Evel Knievel held a vision of audacity that knew no bounds. Undeterred by the canyon's nearly quarter-mile width, Knievel aspired to conquer its depths using a steam-propelled rocket. To realize this audacious dream, he acquired land on both sides of the canyon and meticulously constructed a sprawling 180-foot launch ramp.
A Defining Moment: September 8, 1974
Evel Knievel's journey was a tale of determination undeterred by setbacks. On September 8, 1974, the world witnessed a spectacle as Knievel embarked on a groundbreaking venture. The Skycycle X-2, a steam-powered rocket, stood as his vessel of choice. The event garnered thousands of spectators and reached millions more through televised broadcasts.
Yet, fate had its own plan. Midway across the Snake River Canyon, an unexpected electrical glitch triggered Knievel's parachute prematurely, halting the rocket's trajectory. The rocket descended, guided by the wind's whims, resulting in a minor landing and Evel Knievel's unyielding resilience.
A Legacy Unforgotten
Though the leap didn't unfold as envisioned, the legacy of the Snake River Jump endures as a testament to human courage and innovation. The memory of Knievel's audacious attempt remained etched in collective memory, prompting his admirers to erect a monument near the Perrine Bridge, commemorating his intrepid spirit and marking the site of the would-be leap.
Evel Knievel's physical presence may have departed in 2007, but his legend endures. Beyond the Snake River Jump, Knievel's legacy encompasses a tapestry of remarkable feats, from his triumph over 14 Greyhound buses astride a Harley-Davidson XR-750 to his enduring legacy carried forward by his son, Robbie Knievel, who etched his name in the annals of stunt performance with 20 world records.
Continuing the Tradition: Eddie Braun's Remarkable Endeavor
Fast forward to September 16, 2016, when a new chapter unfolded. Stuntman Eddie Braun embraced the challenge, replicating Evel Knievel's famed Snake River Jump in Twin Falls, Idaho. With a Skycycle rocket mirroring the original, labeled "Evel Spirit," Braun soared to speeds exceeding 400 mph. His controlled parachute deployment led to a triumphant landing across the canyon. Braun's success served as a testament to the feasibility of Knievel's endeavor, had his parachute not deployed prematurely.
As we honor the 49th anniversary of the Evel Knievel Snake River Jump, we pay homage to the undying spirit of those who dare to defy limits. The legacy of this historic leap remains a beacon of determination, celebrating the unwavering resolve of the legendary motorcycle daredevil and the enduring allure of extraordinary feats he achieved.

How To Visit Evel Knievel's Snake River Canyon Jump Site
Published on August 25, 2023 at 9am
Twin Falls, Idaho (The Motorcycle Lawyer) — This year marks the 49th anniversary of the famous Snake River Canyon Jump attempted by legendary motorcycle stuntman, Evel Knievel. When embarking on a journey, it's fun to seek those unexpected gems that lie just off the beaten path. During a recent county excursion encompassing the scenic landscapes of Idaho, and a touch of Oregon, Washington, and Montana, an intriguing detour led me to the vicinity of the Evel Knievel Snake River Canyon jump site. It was in September of 1974 that the renowned American stuntman, entertainer, and entrepreneur Evel Knievel etched his name in history by attempting to leap the 1600-foot span of the Snake River Canyon near Twin Falls, Idaho. Mounted on the steam-powered X2 "skycycle," Knievel's audacious endeavor captured the imaginations of thousands witnessing the spectacle live and millions more tuning in via television. Soaring at speeds exceeding 300 miles per hour, he defied gravity above the depths of the Snake River below.
Navigating to the Evel Knievel Snake River Canyon Jump Site
Nestled in proximity to Twin Falls, Idaho, the Evel Knievel Snake River Canyon jump site is a testament to daring human spirit. Situated south of Interstate 84 in the heart of south-central Idaho, accessing this iconic site is a straightforward endeavor. Travelers can seamlessly arrive at the jump site by choosing Exit 173 (US 93 if approaching from the west) or exit 182 (Idaho Route 50 if arriving from the east) from Interstate I-84. A southbound route will lead to Falls Avenue, followed by a northward turn onto 3200 East, spanning roughly a mile's distance. Arriving at a gated community, a left turn and a short journey will bring you to an unlocked gate.
There's a sign on the gate that says it's closed from 10 PM to 6 AM, you pass through the gate and continue along the gravel road for approximately half a mile.
Parking at the Evel Knievel Snake River Canyon Jump Site
For optimal access to the Evel Knievel Snake River Canyon jump site, a designated parking area offers convenience. This sizable parking lot is the preferred location for visitors keen on experiencing the site's historic significance. A brief stroll from the parking area will bring you to the actual Snake River Canyon jump site, where a piece of history awaits.
Should a more extensive trek be your preference, a hiking trail tracing the south rim of the Snake River Canyon provides an alternate option. For those seeking an immersive experience, parking is available at the Poleline trailhead or Shoshone Falls Park. However, if your focus remains on witnessing the Evel Knievel Snake River Canyon jump site, the recommended parking off 3200 East serves as the optimal choice.
From the parking area, a glimpse of the remnants of the once towering 180-foot structure awaits, with the hill's vestiges and concrete footings serving as a poignant reminder of Knievel's historic leap.
Commemorating Evel Knievel's Historic Attempt
While the attempt fell short of the intended feat, the essence of Evel Knievel's spirit endures at the jump site. An informational sign gracing the location provides insights into the daring stunt. As Knievel's parachute deployed prematurely, he found himself hurtling over the canyon at over 300 miles per hour, only to be thwarted by the untimely gust of wind that ultimately redirected his trajectory back into the canyon.
As we reflect on the 49th anniversary of Evel Knievel's Snake River Canyon jump, we honor not just the man, but the indomitable spirit that propels individuals to defy limits and embrace the thrill of the unknown.

Jason The Motorcycle Lawyer reminds everyone that one of the biggest accident threats to motorcycles is when an oncoming vehicle turns left directly into the motorcycle's lane, leaving no options for the biker to escape. Keep your eyes open and watch for motorcycles.

13th Annual Thunder at the River Returns to Manistee on July 7-8: Honoring Local Veterans
MANISTEE — Thunder at the River, a much-anticipated event, is gearing up for its 13th edition next month, promising an exciting time while raising funds for local military veterans.
Organized by the nonprofit Rolling Thunder Michigan Chapter No. 1 for over a decade, this event aims to serve veterans' causes, with all proceeds going towards supporting these noble individuals.
July 7 - On July 7, Thunder at the River will kick off at the Little River Casino Resort. Residents are encouraged to participate in escorting the Michigan Vietnam Memorial Wall and Michigan Middle Eastern Conflict Memorial Wall in Manistee. The walls will be escorted by representatives from Rolling Thunder, AMVETS Riders, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 73, tribal, state, and local enforcement.
Staging for the ride will begin at 2 p.m. with John Lefler and Gary Fender leading the event as ride captains. It's important to note that no registration is required to take part in escorting the walls.
Also on July 7, from 6-9 p.m., Bike Night, presented by the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association Chapter 35-7 in conjunction with Thunder at the River, will take place on River Street in Manistee. The event welcomes the public to enjoy a family-friendly atmosphere with food, live music, and a people's choice competition for the best bike. All proceeds will contribute to local veterans' causes.
July 8 - The highlight of Thunder at the River, the Pure Thunder Escorted Veterans Memorial Ride, will commence on July 8 at 11 a.m. The registration for the ride will be open from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the casino.
Organizer John Stocki expressed his hope for a significant turnout and anticipates at least a couple of hundred bikes to participate, depending on weather conditions. A spectacular U.S. Coast Guard helicopter flyover is expected to inaugurate the ride, adding to the excitement, unless duty calls.
Riders are expected to return to the casino by 2:30-3 p.m., where the band BVO will entertain the crowd from 2:30 p.m. until closing time.
Throughout the July 8 event, attendees can enjoy barbecue, visit various vendors, explore the beer tent, participate in the silent auction, and try their luck in the 50/50 raffle.
For interested vendors, there is still available space. To inquire or seek further information, contact John Stocki at 231-477-5162.
Thunder at the River promises a thrilling time for all attendees while supporting and honoring the local veterans who have served their country with dedication and sacrifice. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of a meaningful cause in Manistee.
