THE Motorcycle Lawyer ℠ wrote the book! Hot off the presses, Jason Waechter's Litigating Motorcycle Injury & Death Cases acts as an aid for victims of motorcycle accidents and the attorneys that represent them.

There is no single book that could possibly cover all of the ins and outs of personal injury law or motorcycle law. This book is no different. Attorney Jason Waechter prepared this book as a basic guide of Michigan's Automobile No-Fault Law.

Topics covered include distinctions between different classes of motorcycles, motorcycle statistics, overview of an insurance claim, common motorcycle injuries, litigation, and much more.

If you are ever involved in an accident, don't hesitate to call Jason Waechter, THE Motorcycle Lawyer℠! He wrote the book!

You know reading this blog article and watching you on FB, I noticed that this Motorcycle law thing seems bigger than I thought. If that is the case shame on the system if it discriminates against motorcyclists. I read these horror stories about motorcyclists getting minor/major injuries, or worse and the insurance companies want to run or you don't have the support that you thought you were paying for. My question to you is; is there a list of what I should have for insurance coverage (In Michigan) and that I can legally ask my insurance company to give me. I know this costs money but if it "Protects" me and my family so be it. It just worries me that with all this concernable conversation going on there really isnt more done to help us bikers out there for accidents. Cagers have it but bikers are the minority, Hmm!

Robert,

Thanks for the comment.  You are right-- we bikers get shafted in many ways under Michigan law.  As you are aware in Michigan you choose whether to have collision coverage on your vehicle if you want it fixed or replaced after a crash.  There is a deductible that you are responsible for.  If there is a crash your insurance company will pay to have the vehicle fixed or the fair market value of the vehicle least the deductible. If you're in a car you can get your deductible back, up to $500, from the at-fault driver or his insurance company. However motorcyclists cannot.

After a crash I review my client's motorcycle insurance policy and often when I explain it to them, they are surprised to learn that they did not have the coverage they thought they did.  There is no definition or understanding in the Michigan insurance community as to what "full coverage” means. Therefore you cannot just ask for full coverage.

If you decide you want collision coverage or not and then choose a deductible know that in most instances you will not be recovered from the at-fault driver. (There are a few exceptions for example; if the other driver did not have any insurance or if your motorcycle was parked in a reasonable manner when it was damaged).

Customization: you should figure out what type of customization you have on your motorcycle and how much comes with the insurance policy you are buying. Sometimes there is none. Sometimes there is a $1,000 worth. Be sure to have this conversation with your agent.

Bali injury coverage: this pays someone else if you are negligent and hurt them.  Typically on a motorcycle if you hit a car the people in it are not usually injured. However there are times when a motorcyclist hits a pedestrian.  The injuries I see in regards to this claim are to the passenger of the motorcycle. You only need $20,000 to be legal however, I recommend $100,000.

I also recommend uninsured and underinsured motorist protection coverage. Please see my website for full explanation. This will cover you in the event where if the negligent driver injures you and they do not have insurance or enough insurance to cover your injury.

These are the type of coverage that you can request from your agent that come to mind when reading your question. Please visit my website for other or more thorough explanation of recommended insurance. Thank you again for your comment and question.
